Q: How easy is it to access my data once it’s backed up?
Using your client software you can view your data just like you do on your own computer.
Find the files you need and instantly restore them.
Q: What computer requirements are there to be able to use your service?
A typical Windows-based operating system and an internet connection (DSL or Cable
preferred over dialup). All versions of 32-bit Windows, including Windows-95, 98, NT, 2000, ME, and
XP are supported as well as all networks, including Novell Netware and all Windows networks.
Q: How long does it take to install the Remote Backup software?
Typically 5-10 minutes.
Q: Why do I need Remote Data Backup?
Most users do not backup their computer files as often
as they should and, even if they do, they do not store their data
safely off-site. Remote Backup eliminates the hassle of backing up
because there are no additional hardware components, disks or tapes.
And you have the added security of having your files backed up
off-site to our secure facility. You can sleep better at night
knowing all your data files are backed up properly.
Q: Why Are Remote Backups Considered More Beneficial?
The data is immediately stored off-site using an automated backup
system. Also, only an internet connection is needed, completely
eliminating the need for any backup equipment and media. And,
since the system is automated, manual labor is eliminated.
Offsite backups are preferred by some
insurance companies for safety and recovery purposes. Customers who
have used tape backup systems in the past have realized they needed
an automatic backup system when in the event they needed to find the
latest tape to restore something, it was in the car, their
briefcase, etc. or it wasn't marked correctly so they spent alot of
wasted time. With our system, you simply open up the software
and click on the files you need to restore.
Q: What are my chances of losing my data? In other words, do I
really want to pay a monthly fee to backup my data?
94% of computer users have experienced a significant loss of data, on average once per year, and
the majority of losses are caused by equipment failure or operator error. Given that over 90% of business organizations, and 33% of households in North America currently have at least one PC in use on the premises, it's safe to say that data loss is a significant and costly problem.
This cost can be devastating to an organization if complete or even partial data loss is experienced, in that the lost data, if not adequately backed up, must be manually restored. This does not include the potential loss of business and revenue streams experienced while the organization’s computer systems are effectively down. In fact, in 1995, the data “disaster recover” market size in North America exceeded $1 billion dollars a year for the first time.
Q: Any new software I need to purchase?
No. Our client software is all that is needed and is included with your subscription.
Q: How often can I back up my data?
Daily, Weekly, Monthly, or On Demand. The choice is yours.
Q: How much data can I backup?
As much as you want. You will be charged based on the actual amount of compressed data that you store.
For more information see our Rates Page.
Q: Can I use my computer while backing up?
Yes you can, our Remote Backup System runs in the background, and will not interfere with other programs you are running.
Q: Is my data encrypted as it travels over the Internet?
Yes. All data is encrypted before it leaves your computer.
Q: Does it work if our company has a firewall?
Absolutely. The software works on a specific port which can be
opened by your firewall, allowing the software to run.
Q: What information can you see about my files?
We can not see any of the file names or size of the files, since they are compressed and encrypted at the clients site.
Q: My office is networked. Does your service work on a network?
Yes. Not only will we backup data on your file server, but each computer that is in the network will have access to the Web.
Q: What happen if I get disconnected during the backup?
No Problem. If a current backup cannot be sent or is interrupted, the Backup client software will continue to retry until a connection can be re-established, it will pick up from where it was interrupted until the entire backup is complete.
Q: What factors affect the monthly cost?
The primary factors are volume of data, the type of data backed up, the amount of data that changes between backups, and the number of backups that are retained.
Q: Do you back up home computers?
Absolutely! We offer the same service, training and support for your important home computer data.
Q: How is Remote Backup of Rochester's system different from other backup services I've heard about?
Our software is completely client controlled. We do not and can not access your data. All backup schedules, files choices, options, est. are in YOUR control. The data is compressed and encrypted BEFORE it leaves your computer and you are the only one with a key.
Q: How reliable is Remote Backup of Rochester's software?
Our software has been in use since 1985 and has reliably backed up
data for thousands of businesses.
Q: What if we already have a tape backup system?
Using a tape backup system and a remote backup system offers the
best of both worlds. Critical files, like billing, customer contact
files and databases can be kept on the remote backup system. Your tape system can be used to create a full backup of the entire
system once or twice a month, instead of on a daily basis. The tapes
and drive will last longer and require less maintenance. The remote
backup system can provide a quick and easy way to retrieve critical
files and databases without the hassle of searching through tapes.
Q: What if we already have a Zip drive?
We believe that it is not optimal for most users to use a zip or other removable disk media
alone for backup. Our remote backup
service is completely automated and has the required file redundancy
to protect important data. The only safe way to use a zip drive for
backup is to have three disks and make the same backup three times,
in case of disk failure.
Q: How long will a remote backup take?
The initial
backup can take several nights to complete. After that, it depends
on how many files you need to backup that have changed from a
previous backup session. It also depends on connection speed: dialup
will take significantly longer that a cable connection. We recommend backing up
your most important files first and then selecting other files as the
backup progresses. Or, the initial backup can be run over the
weekend.
Q: How Secure Are the Remote Backups?
Extremely. All files are encrypted using Blowfish or DES encryption, which
is selected by the user with their own personal encryption code
and is only known by the user of the system. Blowfish encryption
has never been broken by a hacker, and DES is so secure it is used by the federal
banking system.
Q: Is technical support available?
An initial training session is included. 24/7 technical support is available.
